And besides a price drop for the base model, I’m not sure what we have to look forward to here.
I got my PS5 as a Christmas gift 3 years ago, once it was more widely available and I’d resolved myself to just owning a Switch and a PC, as I think many people have with the most recent generation of consoles.
I’m sure Sony and Microsoft still have their fair share of diehard fans, but unlike Samsung and Apple, I think both companies have largely given up on attempting to create an “ecosystem” of devices and services to interconnect and keep people locked in (which, to be fair, dear reader, I see as a win for consumers).
The closest I think we have ever come to a Playstation or Xbox “ecosystem” to my knowledge, is just trying to make sure that we buy the box that the majority of our friends have, but even that, in the current console climate of crossplay options, seems largely moot.
Even power-wise, the two consoles are largely homogenous and capable of achieving similar resolutions and framerates, so where does that leave the market for these newest “Pro” or “Elite” mid-console-cycle SKUs?
Currently even high end PCs sporting RTX 4090 GPUs are capable of 8k gaming- If you happen to be an oil barren and can justify the machine and monitor to support it, but that’s not really the target most developers are aiming to achieve.
So that leaves me scratching my head for the impending announcement of the PS5 pro.
Maybe it’ll be capable of 4k, 120 FPS gaming and that will be enough.
Maybe I deserted during the console war so long ago that I don’t even remember what we were fighting for.
I think there is something that Sony COULD, but likely will not announce today that would get everyone excited, and that’s announce a PlayStation Vita folow-up handheld capable of PS4-era graphics.
Again I do think I’m so fully removed from the target market for a mid-cycle upgrade, a “Pro” or “Elite” model, and so much more interested in the handheld emulator scene that I may be totally off-base here, but I’d love to hear about what anyone stumbling upon this page would want from a PS5 Pro, or a new Sony handheld.
Does anyone plan on buying this mid-generation upgrade? What could Sony announce that might sway you, if your answer was no?
As always, dear reader, I’d love to hear your input, and I hope this finds you happy and in good health,
